The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have announced a joint initiative to develop a unified global certification framework for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This collaboration aims to streamline the approval and adoption process for SAF across international markets, addressing current inconsistencies in certification standards.

The new framework will focus on harmonizing technical requirements, sustainability criteria, and traceability protocols, making it easier for airlines and fuel producers to comply with regulations in multiple jurisdictions. Industry stakeholders, including major airlines and fuel suppliers, are actively participating in the consultation process to ensure the framework meets operational and environmental needs.

This development is expected to support the aviation sector's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to more sustainable fuel sources. The joint framework is scheduled for initial implementation in 2025, pending final approval from member states and industry partners.
